Crank-It! is a multiplayer party game for the Playdate, very similar to Bop-It.

Use the full range of inputs the playdate has to offer. Set a new highscore by tilting the device, shouting into the microphone or cranking the crank. But don't let the timer run out or do the wrong thing, else it's game over!

Play cooperatively as a group or try to achieve the highest score on your own.

Contains:

  • 8 unique actions utilizing all input methods of the playdate
  • 5 levels of increasing speed and difficulty
  • 2 game modes: Crank-it! and Simon Cranks
  • original graphics (wow!)
  • custom sound effects (no way!)
  • "music" (might not be a positive, so you can mute it...)

How to play?

Additional  hints

  • If you are in a quiet environment, you can blow into the microphone instead of shouting (but in group shouting can be more fun)
  • The move it or press it actions are not very restrictive: any directional input or any button will work respectively

Is the note about playing without the cover real?

Yes, the Playdate cover uses magnets to hold onto your console, which unfortunately might interfere with the sensor for docking the crank (see here).  If the game is not registering the docking action properly, try playing without the cover. It most likely is not a bug.

Current version: 0.6

Development roadmap:

The game is in active development, but the main game mode is fully playable. Feedback is very welcome. There are plans to add more game modes, so check back regularly for updates.

Any plans to add transitions, completion effects, and fakeout prompts? Love the base concept!

I am currently working on polishing things up with transitions, sounds and effects. You can see some of it here: https://devforum.play.date/t/crank-it-a-multiplayer-party-game-first-prototype-d...

Fakeout prompts is not something that was on my radar tbh. I am going to have to  think about whether and where it makes sense to include those. Thanks for the input though.

Everything looks really polished, animated backgrounds is the only other thing I could've suggested. You're making a killer app here <3

Hi, this was such a cool idea.  I made a little review if anyone is interested:

Hey, thanks for the video. Glad you enjoyed it :)

I am curious though what did you daughter make of the game?

I have to confess, I went to hand her the Playdate, and she just eye-rolled and got back to her Spotify playlist.  Sorry sir, you can't compete with Drake :) #teens.

Aww, but understandable :D Thanks for trying

:). I know - I'll have another attempt, If I get some feedback I'll ping you.  Cheers!

Quick fun and the art ties it together! I've like the option to disable "shout it" so I can play quietly and "pass it" when playing alone.

Hey, glad you like it. That are good suggestions. I will probably come back to that later down the road, when I implement a proper menu, since the playdate only allows 3 menu items to be added.

For the "shout it" action, you can just blow into the mic for now, as a quiet way to play it. :)

Great Idea!  Looking forward to giving it a go.
